ROTOGRAVURE PRINTING

high-volume & high quality plastic packaging printed by the rotogravure printing technology

Gravure printing, also known as rotogravure, is a high-speed intaglio printing method in which images are engraved onto copper-coated cylinders. These engraved cells hold ink and transfer it onto materials such as paper or plastic under pressure. The process is widely recognized for producing sharp, consistent image quality and rich color reproduction, making it especially suitable for large-scale printing applications such as packaging, magazines, and security printing. Fast-drying solvent-based inks are commonly used to support high production speeds.

In the gravure process, a metal cylinder is engraved using either a laser or a diamond stylus to create tiny ink-holding cells. Excess ink is removed from the non-printing areas by a doctor blade, while an impression roller presses the substrate against the cylinder, allowing the image to transfer accurately onto the surface.

Gravure printing is mainly applied in flexible packaging industries, including food and confectionery packaging, cigarette packs, high-volume catalogs, magazines, and occasionally fine art printing. One of its major strengths is its ability to deliver high-quality, durable, and highly consistent print results. It is also extremely efficient for long production runs, with output rates that can reach around 10,000 square meters per hour. In addition, the use of fast-drying inks enables immediate finishing and further processing after printing.

However, gravure printing also has disadvantages. The engraving and preparation of cylinders involve high initial costs, making the method less economical for short-run or small-scale printing jobs.

Compared with other printing techniques such as flexography, which uses raised printing plates, gravure relies on recessed engraved cells. This allows for finer detail reproduction and stronger, denser color application, particularly when using gravure inks.
